How The Racket Stopped Being Made Of Wood

Rackets were laminated wood for most of the sport's history. The shift to metal and then composite materials altered head size, stiffness and swing technique, and forced the laws to define what a racket is.

The limits wood imposed

A wooden frame had to be small, because enlarging the head without adding weight was impossible with the material's stiffness-to-mass ratio.

Small heads mean a small sweet spot, so mishits lost enormous energy and players were rewarded for precise contact rather than for racket speed.

Frames also warped in humidity and required pressing when stored, which is why the old wooden press was standard equipment rather than an accessory.

What metal frames changed first

Metal allowed a stiffer frame at similar weight, which reduced energy lost to flex and made the racket return more of the ball's speed.

Head size could then grow without the frame becoming unwieldy, and the enlarged hitting area made off-centre contact survivable.

That forgiveness changed technique. Players could swing faster with less concern for precision, and the balance between control and power shifted towards power.

The composite era and string tension

Graphite composites let manufacturers tune stiffness in different parts of the frame independently, which is impossible with a homogeneous material.

Stiffer frames transfer more energy but transmit more shock, so string beds became the adjustable element, with lower tensions used to restore feel and higher tensions for control.

String materials changed alongside, and the combination allowed heavy topspin at speeds wooden frames could not produce without the ball leaving the court.

How the laws responded

Governing bodies had written almost nothing about racket construction, because wood constrained the design naturally. New materials removed that constraint.

Maximum dimensions were introduced, and a spaghetti-style double stringing that generated extreme spin was banned outright once its effects became clear.

The stringing rules now specify a generally uniform pattern, which is a rare case of the laws describing manufacture rather than conduct.

The knock-on effect on the game itself

Higher racket speeds and heavier spin shortened rallies on fast surfaces and lengthened them on slow ones, because spin makes aggressive shots land in.

Serve speeds rose enough that some events slowed their surfaces deliberately, an unusual case of the playing environment being adjusted to offset equipment.

The baseline game that dominates today is a direct consequence. Players can hit hard from deep positions with margin over the net, which wooden frames made impossible.
