What a cinder track demanded

Older tracks were built from compacted cinders or similar material, which had to be raked, rolled and repaired continually to remain usable. Rain changed the surface substantially, softening it and slowing everything, so conditions on the same track varied enormously from week to week. Athletes wore spikes that penetrated the surface, and the surface gave way underfoot in a manner that returned very little energy.

Comparing performances across venues was therefore difficult, since the track itself was a significant and unmeasured variable. The sport's obsession with measurement was in permanent tension with a surface that refused to stay the same.

Manufactured surfaces removed the variable

Synthetic tracks are manufactured to a specification and behave consistently in wet and dry conditions, which removed the largest source of venue variation. The material also returns more energy to the athlete than a loose surface can, which improved performances across every event on the track. That improvement was a step change rather than a gradual one, and it created a visible discontinuity in the sport's records.

Athletics absorbed the discontinuity by treating the older performances as belonging to a different technical era, which it does reluctantly. The same argument has recurred with every subsequent change in surfaces and footwear, in almost identical terms.

Training changed more than competition

A durable, all-weather surface can be used every day of the year, which transformed how much specific track work an athlete could do. Cinder tracks degraded under heavy use, so serious training on them was limited by the need to preserve the surface for competition. Removing that constraint allowed far higher volumes of session work on the exact surface an athlete would compete on.

The performance gains from the material itself are therefore only part of the story, and probably the smaller part. Facilities that can be used continuously change a sport more than facilities that are merely better.

The stadium became a different building

A synthetic track requires an engineered base and precise installation, which makes an athletics stadium a considerably more expensive structure than a field with a path around it. That cost pushed athletics towards a smaller number of larger venues, since a town could no longer create a competition track informally. Multi-use stadiums with a track wrapped around a football pitch became the standard compromise, and the arrangement suits neither of the two sports particularly well.

The distance between spectators and the action in such stadiums is a direct consequence of the track's presence. Athletics therefore acquired a facilities problem that follows it into every discussion about stadium construction.

What was lost with the cinders

Variable surfaces produced variable specialists, with some athletes notably better on heavy tracks and others on firm ones. Standardisation removed that variety, in the same way that consistent football pitches removed the mud specialists of an earlier era. The sport gained comparability, which it values above almost everything, and lost a source of unpredictability it never claimed to want.

Nostalgia for cinder tracks is genuinely rare, which distinguishes this from most equipment changes in sport and suggests the trade was straightforwardly a good one. It remains a useful case of a surface change reshaping a sport far beyond the performances it directly improved, reaching into training, facilities and stadium design.
