How The Fosbury Flop Rewrote High Jump Technique
Jumping backwards over the bar was legal only because of a change in landing surfaces, and it replaced every previous technique within a single competitive generation.

Clearing a high jump bar backwards became possible only after landing areas changed. The technique then replaced every earlier method within a single competitive generation.
What the earlier techniques were solving
Older styles required the jumper to land on the feet or in a controlled roll, because the landing area was sand or sawdust and a flat back landing was dangerous.
The scissors, the roll and the straddle all kept the athlete in a position from which a safe landing was possible.
Those constraints shaped the approach and the take-off, since a technique must be built around how the jump ends as much as how it begins.
The equipment change that removed the constraint
Deep foam landing beds absorbed impact across the whole body, which made landing on the back and shoulders survivable and then routine.
Once the landing no longer dictated body position in the air, the only remaining requirement was clearing the bar, and the range of legal shapes widened dramatically.
This is a general pattern in athletics. Technique is usually limited by safety equipment, and improvements in the equipment unlock previously impossible movements.
Why going over backwards is more efficient
An athlete's centre of mass follows a fixed trajectory once airborne, and the bar is cleared by arranging the body so that its parts pass over sequentially.
Arching backwards allows the centre of mass to pass at or even below the bar height while the body clears it, which no upright technique can achieve.
That means less vertical lift is required for the same clearance, which is a direct efficiency gain rather than a stylistic preference.
The approach run had to change too
The technique requires a curved approach, because running a curve generates the lean and rotation needed to turn the body during take-off.
Straight approaches, which the older styles used, cannot produce the rotation, so the whole run-up had to be redesigned rather than adjusted.
Take-off also moved to the outside foot relative to the bar, reversing what jumpers had trained for and making conversion between styles impractical.
Why adoption was total rather than partial
Techniques usually coexist for a period, with different body types favouring different methods, and the older styles did persist briefly.
The efficiency advantage proved large enough that no combination of strength and coordination could compensate, so the alternatives disappeared entirely.
Complete replacement is rare in sport and indicates a genuine mechanical superiority rather than fashion, which is why the change is studied as a case of technical revolution.
