What the closed basket required
A ball that stayed in the goal had to be recovered, either by a person on a ladder or by poking it out with a pole from below.
Play stopped completely for as long as that took, which in a high-scoring game meant frequent interruptions of a minute or more.
The interruption was accepted initially because scores were low, and the retrieval was not obviously a defect when it happened only a handful of times.
Why the fix took a while
Cutting the bottom out seems obvious, but the basket was literally a fruit basket and the goal's identity was tied to the object.
Intermediate solutions were tried, including a mechanism to tip the basket and a chain pull to release the ball, which shortened the delay without removing it.
The metal hoop with an open net came later, and it made the retrieval problem disappear rather than merely reducing it.
What the open net preserved
A net was retained even though it serves no rule function, because it slows the ball's exit slightly and makes a score visually unambiguous.
That visual confirmation mattered before any electronic scoring existed, since officials at a distance needed to see the ball pass through.
The net also directs the ball downward rather than letting it deflect unpredictably, which keeps the restart consistent.
The backboard's separate origin
Backboards were introduced for an unrelated reason, to stop spectators in elevated galleries from interfering with shots by reaching out.
Once installed, players discovered they could be used deliberately, and the bank shot became a technique that the boards were never intended to enable.
Their dimensions and the marked rectangle were standardised later, converting an accidental barrier into a designed part of the playing equipment.
Why continuity became the governing principle
Removing the basket's bottom established a pattern that runs through the sport's rule history, which is that stoppages are treated as defects to be engineered away.
The shot clock, the rules on inbounding quickly, and the limits on timeouts all follow the same logic applied to different sources of delay.
Basketball's distinctive pace is therefore not an accident of the game's design but the accumulated result of decades of removing interruptions one at a time.
