How Electronic Timing Redefined The Record

Hand timing and automatic timing do not measure the same thing. The switch between them invalidated a generation of records and made hundredths of a second meaningful for the first time.

What hand timing actually measured

A timekeeper starts a watch on seeing the smoke or flash of the gun and stops it on judging the torso to cross the line, and both actions involve human reaction.

Reaction at the start is systematically faster than at the finish, because the starter's signal is anticipated while the finish is not.

The result is a consistent bias towards faster times, which is why converting a hand time to an automatic equivalent involves adding a fixed correction.

Why the bias is systematic rather than random

If the errors were random they would cancel across many races, and the two systems would agree on average. They do not.

Timekeepers stop watches late relative to the true finish more often than early, and the visual judgement of a torso crossing a line is itself uncertain.

Because the bias runs one way, hand-timed marks are not merely imprecise but predictably favourable, which makes comparison across eras misleading.

How automatic timing works

The clock is started electrically by the gun itself, removing start reaction entirely, and the finish is captured by a camera scanning the line continuously.

The resulting image is a composite of the line over time rather than a photograph of a moment, which is why athletes appear stretched or compressed in it.

Reading a finish means locating the torso in that image and reading the time from the horizontal axis, which is a measurement rather than a judgement of an instant.

What the change did to records

Records were re-established under the automatic standard, and existing hand-timed marks were either retired or retained separately with clear labelling.

Some athletes' best-known times were effectively downgraded, not because the performances were worse but because the measurement had been generous.

Sprint records are now recorded to hundredths, and longer events to a coarser precision, because the meaningfulness of a hundredth depends on the distance run.

Why reaction time became a separate measurement

Once the clock started with the gun, the athlete's reaction became part of the recorded time rather than being absorbed by the timekeeper's own delay.

Blocks were fitted with sensors so reaction could be measured independently, which turned it into a published statistic and a coachable variable.

It also made the false start rule enforceable by measurement, since a threshold reaction time only means something when reaction is being recorded to thousandths.
