Growing a court rather than building one

A hard court is constructed once and then maintained, whereas a grass court is grown continuously and has to be reconstituted every year. That makes preparation an agricultural exercise, involving seed selection, soil composition, drainage, feeding and a long calendar of work before any play. Grass varieties are chosen for wear tolerance and for how they behave when cut extremely short, which is not what a lawn is normally asked to do.

The work is invisible during the event itself, when the surface simply appears as a green rectangle to everybody watching. Almost every characteristic that players discuss during the fortnight was determined by decisions taken many months earlier.

Bounce comes from the soil

The height and firmness of the bounce depend far more on the compaction of the soil beneath the grass than on the grass itself. Rolling the surface increases firmness, which raises and speeds the bounce, and the degree of rolling is a deliberate choice rather than a constant. Moisture content interacts with this continuously, since a surface holding water behaves differently from the same surface a few hours later.

Groundstaff therefore control a set of variables that materially affect how the sport is played, without any of it appearing in the rules. This is the closest parallel in tennis to the preparation of a cricket pitch, and it is discussed far less openly.

The surface changes as the event proceeds

Grass wears where players stand and move most, producing bare areas along the baselines and behind the service line within a few days. Those areas play differently from the surviving grass, so a match late in an event is played on a surface that has genuinely changed. That progression is unique among tennis surfaces and is one of the strongest arguments for keeping grass in the calendar at all.

It rewards adaptability rather than a single optimised approach, since the conditions a player prepared for will not persist to the end. Cricket has the same property across a long match, and the two sports are almost alone in offering it.

Weather is not an interruption but an input

Rain on a grass court does not simply delay play, since it changes the surface for a period after play resumes. Covers protect the court from saturation, and the sealed environment underneath produces its own effects on the grass and the soil. Sunshine and wind dry the surface unevenly, so different courts at the same venue can be in noticeably different conditions simultaneously.

Roofs solved the scheduling problem and introduced a new one, since an enclosed court has different air and different humidity from an open one. Players notice the difference immediately, which confirms how sensitive the surface is to conditions most sports can ignore entirely.

Why so few places attempt it

The labour required is continuous and skilled, and the courts cannot be used for most of the year without compromising their condition. That combination makes grass viable only where the land is owned outright and the revenue is sufficient to fund staff year round. Clubs that once maintained grass converted to hard courts as costs rose and as members wanted to play through the winter.

The knowledge involved is therefore concentrated in a small number of places, which makes it vulnerable in a way most sporting expertise is not. Maintaining a surface is also maintaining a craft, and the craft disappears faster than the courts do.
